Jane Klarer Lackey
Jane Klarer-Lackey lives in Revelstoke, BC and started her ceramics training working as an apprentice with Oz Parsons pottery in 1978/79 in Toronto, ON. She then continued on to receive a 3 year Design Arts diploma with a Major in Ceramics from Georgian College in Barrie, Ontario in 1983 and received a Simcoe County Arts and Crafts Scholarship.
With the opportunity to continue her education for another year, she studied at York University in their Visual Arts department. While working part and full time in the post secondary IT industry, she maintained a ceramics studio and was an active member in the Durham Potters Guild. She has continued her interest and training through attending conferences, courses and mentorships through Fusion, the Ontario Clay and Glass Association and was also a board member for 2 years.
Her numerous group exhibitions include “Parallel Journeys Two Mentorships” Exhibition in 2011, Fusion “Fireworks” Exhibition (2011, 2015) and Durham Potters Guild Exhibitions (2007, 2018).
“I work with translucent porcelain and a technique commonly referred to as “Nerikomi” which is a Japanese term for working with blended clays and/or coloured clays. Most work is hand built but I often use a combination of hand built and wheel thrown parts. Translucent porcelain allows light to penetrate the surface and reveal other gradient colours similar to the landscape as fog moves in and out of mountain valleys, fields and rivers. My intent is not to portray the landscape but to make you feel you are immersed and part of it. Although I do enjoy making work for everyday use I also like to break the functional barrier once in a while.”
