About The Piece

‘The Weight of Water’ was created by Hayley Stewart in collaboration with Whistler’s Kris Kupskay for their 2023 exhibition at the Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre’s Public Art Gallery. This large-scale ocean painting captures a powerful barrel wave as it curls and crashes forward, primarily painted in Hayley Stewart’s signature style, using a vibrant palette of teal and blue to capture the clarity and energy of a wave in full daylight. Kris Kupskay’s influence comes through in the final details, with ethereal airbrushing barreling off the wave and extending beyond its edges. These delicate, almost starlit marks contrast beautifully with the weight and movement of the wave, adding an unexpected sense of whimsy and atmosphere to the piece. The result is a dynamic collaboration that blends Hayley’s bold, fluid approach to the ocean with Kris’s more otherworldly finishing touches.
