“Columnar Cedar” is a piece by Melanie MacVoy based on old growth cedars near her home in Fernie, B.C.

“The trunk of this cedar reminded me of a column or pillar supporting a lush garden of branches and fronds on top. I often use this up-looking perspective so that the viewer can feel like they are standing beneath these giants of the forest.

I wanted to create layers of depth, keep the foliage asymmetrical, bring in some reds with the bark and create some visual rest areas in the loose abstract brushstrokes of the background.” – Melanie MacVoy
