Zuzana Riha | A Horse with No Name
About The Piece
‘A Horse with No Name’ is a piece by Zuzana Riha created in 2023. The title of this piece is a play on words based on the song by American folk rock trio ‘America.’ Composed of weather-worn driftwood sourced from local shores, the sculpture conjures the wild spirit of the horse: muscular, alert, and rooted in the elemental. The carefully chosen pieces of wood, each curve and grain preserved, emulate the animal’s sinews and coat; yet the material itself speaks of renewal and the beauty of what was once cast aside. Through this work, Riha creates a powerful visual tension: a lone horse, emblem of freedom and wilderness, constructed from materials shaped by human hands and nature’s tides. It invites the viewer to see the common discarded wood transformed into the extraordinary, and to reflect on our connection to the wild world, our capacity for change, and our responsibility toward all living things.
‘After many long hours of collecting and assembling all this driftwood, I’m ready to saddle up and take a ride off into the sunset for a while.’
