Mount Mackenzie – View from Subpeak
About The Piece
“Mount Mackenzie from Sub Peak” is an oil painting created by David Walker. This piece was shown at the Revelstoke Visual Arts Centre’s Public Art Gallery for Walker’s solo show titled ‘Land, Light and Cultural Identity.’ David Walker is an established interdisciplinary mixed Indigenous artist of Nlaka’pamux, Syilx and European ancestry.
“It is not the average eye that catches the edge detail […in my paintings.] I first observed this [style] in New York at the MET studying the French Impressionist work. The likes of Manet, Degas and Cezanne. When they started to move away from academic painting and examine optics they adopted this approach. When you think about the visual perception of your eyes there is a softening around the periphery. Not a hard line edge. I find it provides a certain relief or perhaps a calming agent to the painting.” – David Walker
