Stephen Plant
Gardom Lake, British Columbia

Stephen’s love for pottery began in 1970 with the purchase of Eagle Valley Pottery. Teaching himself the craft with a Leach treadle wheel, locally dug clay, and books by Bernard Leach and Michael Cardew, he created functional earthenware and wood-fired Raku pots, stamped The Pottery Plant, Sicamous B.C., until 1974.
In 1989, after years in surveying and construction, he revived The Pottery Plant in Revelstoke, B.C., using modern kilns, an electric wheel, and Medicine Hat stoneware clay. His “peach and teal” phase emerged, featuring coloured slips, sgraffito designs, and poetry by Bliss Carman. During this time, early traces of his signature Celtic knots appeared.
By 2001, Stephen returned to pottery full-time as Heaven In Earth Pottery at Gardom Lake, B.C. With porcelaneous California clay and digital kiln records, he embraced the unpredictable beauty of firing, resulting in striking glaze effects that complement his intricate Celtic knotwork. For Stephen, pottery is mindfulness in motion—a dance with fire, a balance of tradition and
experimentation, creating pieces as meaningful as they are beautiful.
